Joss Whedon & the Avengers & My Prediction

So, this post is a bit of a departure but hey, my blog.

I am a big Joss Whedon fan. I consider myself a bit of a Browncoat and own both Buffy and Angel in the huge mega DVD box sets.

So when it was announced today that the man is to direct the long awaited Marvel Comic’s Avengers movie the internet fandom shouted with joy!

Not me.

Wanna know why?

Because I’ve SEEN his work. You want to know what happens in his work?

Not just that but lovable characters die in the most horrible unexpected rip your heart out and piss on it way imaginable.

Don’t believe me?

Go back and watch Tara get shot on Buffy. Or Wash getting shish-kabob-ed by Reavers. Hell he couldn’t even end Dollhouse without thinking “Who can I kill?”

I liken Joss Whedon to an abusive boyfriend like that (I say this not to trivialize the horrors abuse here, it’s simply a metaphor, work with me on that level please). We know he’s gonna do it. He’s going to keep hurting us. Yet we fans keep coming back for more because he goes and makes it up to us with witty dialog and smart plot lines. But then he hurts us again and we swear we won’t come back… then it’s “Hey he’s directing The Avengers Movie” and it’s all “Joss can do no wrong.”

We are suckers.

So when lovable, sexy, Iron Man randomly buys it after he drops some plucky comic relief, don’t come crying to me. I warned you.

Of course I’ll be right next to you in the theater muttering right along with you, “Whedon, you BASTARD!

New Make-Over Show, Gender Queer Style

Confession: I have a secret obsession with makeover shows. I love them.

Not shows like “Extreme Makeover” that say you have to go under the knife in order to be accepted, or “Biggest Loser” which will only work when you have a drill instructor like trainer ridding your ass to stay fit.

No, I mean things like “What Not to Wear” and “How to Look Good Naked” which try to show people how to be themselves, as they are, but with some window dressing, like better fitting clothes, a little bit of makeup, and not over-plucking their eyebrows.

So, naturally, my jaw hit the floor when I saw the promo for VH1’s TRANSForm Me.

The idea is that 3 transwomen, who went through so much to make their own outsides match how they felt inside, now are working together to bring out the inner fabulosity in stuck-in-a-rut ciswomen. (more…)

A response to Graydancer’s “Rant”

So today Graydancer, the ninja sex poodle and ronin of love of  Ropcast.net fame, posted a rant in his podcast that I’ve been waiting for since Sunday night of Black Rose.

You can find said “rant” HERE.

Now, I don’t know about you, but when I think “rant” I think Denis Leary and Lewis Black, not a well reasoned observation and conclusion to be responsible about what one teaches. So, on the “rant” front, kind of disappointing.

I’ll give you the Cliffs Notes for context, but you should listen to what he has to say on your own. His basic thesis is this: General Pansexual Kinky Events – such as Black Rose, TES-Fest, Dark Odyssey, etc – are not the place to teach suspension.

He gives several supporting evidence for this, such as poor control as to making sure that the people who come to the 2nd half of a class go to the 1st half. Another notable observation he makes is that people who don’t even know if they like rope at all are going to these classes, completely skipping over 101 and going right to grad school (my phrasing, not his).

Where I disagree is that the answer is (for him) to not teach rope suspension at these events at all.

My first reason for disagreeing is this – often these events are the only exposure people get beyond their tiny local scene to people who REALLY know what the fuck they are doing. It is REALLY difficult for the much group in the middle of Armpit, Virginia to afford the travel, lodging, and expenses of bringing out a BIG name to teach an all day suspension workshop. So individuals from those areas go to the big weekend events to learn all they can to bring back to the community. (more…)

I’m Torn

In The Wake of DOSC09, I’m torn.

I’ve used Livejournal since 2001. I have many posts there. What I like about these posts is the ability to keep them locked so only certain viewers can see them.

Most of my adventures at DOSC09 have been chronicled there.

I want to be able to put out snippets for public consumption, but I am a bit gun-shy about putting my sex life out there for just ANYONE to see.  Living in the DC Metro area, the memories of The Washingtonienne blog sex scandal are still fresh in my mind as a warning. Especially since I’m not nearly as slim and hot as Jessica Cutler. I mean, face it, with my bottom heavy natural boobed goddess shape I’ll never be getting offers from Playboy. But that’s another rant for another time.

Now, if I thought for a second that this little blog would make it so I wouldn’t have to worry about bills anymore, I might not have such reservations. Alas, I am a realist.

Of course, I’ve been gonzo with the sex chatter on Twitter since returning. But, for me, that’s a bit different. 99% of the time that’s me trying to be funny in 140 characters.

Yet, it’s crazy to have a site dedicated to promoting my abilities as a sex educator and not talk about sex in the adjacent blog. No?

What are your thoughts, my fellow sex blogger and sex educator friends?

In Memoriam: Jack McGeorge

A couple of weeks ago Harvey J. “Jack” McGeorge II passed away. I started writing this right after his funeral. In typical Margo Eve Style, when I write something this deep, I rarely finish it. So, even thought I don’t think this is great, I’m going to post it anyway.

::begin::
I would hope that my first post here would be more up-beat, but the moment calls for something more somber. I spent Sunday evening at the funeral service of Jack McGeorge. So many turned out for this service that the entire funeral home was dedicated to seating those who celebrated his life and mourned his passing.

This is a significant loss to 2 very distinct and vastly different communities.

First, the US Intelligence community. We owe a lot of our safety in the US to Jack McGeorge. Listening to his colleagues eulogize him I was struck at how much he sounded like a character out of a Tom Clancy novel… times a thousand. He was the go-to-guy on chemical and biological weapons. He’s been all over the world. He’s been in the Marines, The Special Forces, and the Secret Service. He’s been recognized by Princes, Presidents, and Popes (well, at least one). More over, he taught what he knew to others in the mission of preserving the safety of the USA.

The other community is the BDSM community. The list of his accomplishments in this community are almost as long as his acomplishments in the Intelligence community. He helped found Black Rose in DC. He served as the Chair for the Board of Directors for CARAS. He set the bar for being an educator in the kink community and has be recognized many times over for this. There are very few presenters in the scene now who have not been inspired or influenced somehow by Jack McGeorge.

You may remember back before the second Iraq war started there were weapons inspections. You may also remember that Jack was one of them and that his involvement in the BDSM scene came up as a ruse to discredit the entire search effort. Jack turned this controversy into a lesson for others, in case they ever found themselves in a similar situation. He found the teachable moment even in one of his worst professional moments.

Truly, Jack McGeorge had a teacher’s soul.
